Case Study

Contemporary Rural Living with a Striking Curved Roof Design

This Newark garden annexe by Heritage Residences, part of the Heritage Living Group, demonstrates how strong architectural design and SIPs construction can deliver a high-quality, self-contained living space.

Set within a working farm, the annexe was designed to sit comfortably in its rural surroundings while providing year-round residential comfort.

Designed for Modern Living

The brief was to create a generous, light-filled annexe suitable for everyday living and entertaining.

A spacious open-plan living and kitchen area forms the heart of the building, enhanced by a 3-metre internal ceiling height that creates a strong sense of openness. Full-height glazing and wide sliding doors connect the interior to the surrounding landscape, flooding the space with natural light and countryside views.

A Distinctive Curved Roof

The curved roof is a defining feature of this annexe, giving the building a contemporary identity while softening its profile within the rural setting.

An extended roof overhang adds practical weather protection and provides a refined architectural finish.

Premium Exterior Finishes

The exterior is finished in Millboard Board & Batten cladding in Burnt Cedar, chosen for its natural timber appearance and low-maintenance durability.

A large Golden Oak Millboard deck wraps around the annexe, extending the living space outdoors and creating an ideal area for relaxing and entertaining. A discreet Lastagrip ramp provides safe, accessible entry without compromising the design.

SIPs Construction for Comfort and Performance

The annexe was built using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the floor, walls and roof.

SIPs deliver excellent thermal performance and airtightness while allowing for clean architectural lines, generous ceiling heights and complex detailing such as the curved roof and large glazed openings.

Interior Finish

Internally, the annexe is finished to a high residential standard with a calm, contemporary feel.

Key features include:

  • Open-plan living and kitchen area with 3m ceiling height

  • Separate utility entrance

  • Plastered walls in soft neutral tones

  • Durable residential flooring

  • Contemporary kitchen and bathroom

  • Integrated lighting throughout

Every detail was selected to support comfortable, long-term living.

The Result

The completed Newark annexe delivers a flexible, energy-efficient living space with strong architectural presence. It blends modern design with rural sensitivity, creating a high-quality residence that performs as well as it looks.
